Lawyer, Portalis was a practitioner, who along with four other practitioners became entrusted by Napoleon, the task of drafting the « Code civil » (Civil Code). It was enacted in 1804. Portalis is the most famous of the four, because of his « Discours préliminaire au premier projet de Code civil ») (Preliminary Discourse on the first draft of the Civil Code). This text, which as a whole and in each of its sentences, is a reference to the art of making laws. Portalis is buried in the « Panthéon » (Paris).
